Falcon - Glenridding 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

A Lake District village on a bright summer day, with more walkers than residents. Painted by Trevor Mitchell. Glenridding sits at the head of Ullswater, and this is it doing what it does every weekend of the season.

What you are looking at

A road running through the village between slate and stone buildings: an outdoor clothing and equipment shop with its awning out, a food store, a slate-roofed pub with a hanging sign, and a row of grey stone houses with white window frames. A vintage green Land Rover parked outside the shop and a red Royal Mail van further up the road.

On the right, Glenridding Beck runs down over rocks between dry stone walls, clear and fast, with a low wall along the road above it. The foreground is full of walkers: two men in orange and blue jackets with rucksacks, a couple with a pushchair and a small girl in pink, a pair looking down at the beck with a black and white border collie beside them, an older woman with walking poles. What it is like to build

Three bands again, and the middle one is the easy one. The buildings across the centre give you slate roofs, straight walls, window grids and shop signage, all hard-edged. Build them first and the picture is anchored.

The walkers are the second win. Every jacket is a different saturated colour against grey stone, so each figure is a quick, satisfying object. The two hard regions are the fells and the beck. The fells are large areas of graded green with cloud shadow moving across them, sorted by tone rather than by colour. The beck is broken white water over dark rock, and the way in there is to place the rocks first, since they are the only stable shapes, and let the water fill between them.
