What you are looking at

A classic painted Christmas scene, warm figure against a cold blue-and-white winter background. Santa is reaching up with the gold star in his right hand and a bauble in his left. The tree runs the full right-hand side of the picture, strung with coloured lights, gold bead garlands and glass ornaments, with a squirrel tucked in among the branches. An owl sits on a snowy branch top left. A deer stands to Santa's left, a fox and a duck at the bottom edge, and a black bear leans in from the right. Everything behind is deep blue snow shadow.

What it is like to build

Two zones, and they could not be more different. The right side is the tree: dense, high-contrast, packed with distinct small objects, and it will fall together quickly because every piece carries a light or a bauble or a length of gold garland. The left side is snow and blue shadow, and that is where the evening goes.

Take the red coat as your spine. It is the largest continuous block of a single strong colour in the picture and it runs top to bottom through the centre. Build outward from it into the fur trim, then the animals, then let the snow be the last thing you do, sorting by how blue or how white each piece is rather than by shape.

Why the Cobble Hill cut is different

Cobble Hill are a Canadian brand and they cut a random cut rather than a grid: the pieces do not line up in rows, the shapes are irregular, and no two are alike. That is worth real money on the snow field, where colour has almost nothing left to tell you and shape has to do the work. The board carries a linen print texture.
